MCP has long-standing relationships with local schools and colleges throughout Hertfordshire, providing careers talks and information that gives young people an insight into the many career options open to them in construction and property maintenance.

This summer for six weeks, we opened our doors to a number of 16 and 17 year olds for a week of work experience at MCP.  Each week, two students joined us to gain an insight into how our business works and to experience working in a variety of different departments.

The student programme included a full-day induction into the business including health and safety and an informal Q&A session with team members from different departments.

The rest of their week was split into half days, enabling them to experience working in a variety of different departments across:

Commercial
New Business
Operations
Finance

Work experience feedback

The feedback that we had from students was very positive.

One of those who took part was Lainie, who was introduced to the work experience programme through her Dad, one of our employees, Roy Newman, Electrical QS.

At a small Q&A session at the end of the week, Lainie kindly gave us her honest feedback.

Q: What did you enjoy most about your work experience with MCP?
A: I enjoyed talking to Tracy and Rosie, and learning about what they do and what their jobs are.

Q: What was the most interesting part?
A: Getting to know Mick and how he grew the company.

Q Why did you choose MCP?
A: My Dad works for the company, and I wanted to get an understanding as to what he does on a day-to-day basis and see if there was a department that I would be interested in.

Q Would you recommend MCP to a friend?
A: Yes, because there are so many positive attributes within the company. The work culture is good and the opportunities that you could come across are endless.

Q What was your involvement in the MCP work experience?
A:  I started off with the health and safety induction training, it then progressed into a project to do a script for an apprenticeship video for the website.

Q Was MCP a comfortable environment to work in?
A: Yes, because everyone is accepting and welcoming. You are treated like an employee and not just work experience.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all of the young people that took part in this year’s summer work experience programme. We hope that it opened their eyes to the many opportunities open to them, including trainee apprenticeship opportunities.
